A-rental-van, FUCK YEAH!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken, we're 4 cardboard boxes away from being completely(ish) done booking this thing...
More specifically those would be 80 linear inch cardboard boxes. Nothing like shoving 92 linear inches of stuff into a 80 linear inch box. Heh, heh, heh.....
ReplyDeleteI seem to be having a tough time finding a box online less than 80 linear inches. May be using two boxes under 62" as my freebies. and paying to check my suitcase.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm gonna have to spend some time w/ my bike and a tape measure. My box is 53x32x8 (93total). I think I can take some inches off the 53 and the 32 but who knows. I figured I could always put my fork in my suitcase. www.uline.com has bike boxes that are 54x8x28 (90 total). Its gonna be tough gettin' down to 80. I emailed southwest to find out what happens if it's over 80 (xtra fee or no-go). 62 ain't a whole lot either. That's like 26x26x10 barely enough room for a wheelset.
ReplyDeleteI measured mine and can only fit it into 2 62" boxes if I remove the rear triangle, which is kinda a pain in the ass. This weekend, Im gonna bring some cardboard home from work and break my bike down see if I can mock up an 80" box and fit it in there. If so, I'll go for the uline box and cut it down.
ReplyDeleteI heard back from southwest. She didn't really give me a direct answer to my question about the 80 inch rule.
ReplyDeleteDear John,
Thank you for your e-mail concerning traveling with a bicycle.
Non-motorized bicycles (including Bike Friday and Co-Pilot) will be accepted in substitution for one of the two free pieces of checked baggage at no additional charge (provided that the bicycle is properly packaged and the box containing the bicycle fits within the 62-inch sizing limit and weighs 50 pounds or less). The handlebars, kickstand, and pedals must be removed and placed inside the box. Since your bicycle does not meet the criteria above, a $50.00 charge per one-way flight will apply. Please also note that bicycles packaged in a cardboard box or soft-sided case will be transported as a "conditionally accepted" item which means, we accept liability for loss, but not for damage. This information is also on southwest.com.
Thanks again for contacting us. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us anytime at 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792).
Sincerely,
Gloria, Southwest Airlines
